Mara Briefing: The BBNJ Agreement
Scheduled for 18-19 February 2025 in Singapore, the second Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Symposium will concentrate on the ratification and implementation of the June 2023 UN "High Seas" Treaty. This treaty, critical for the governance of biodiversity on the high seas—areas that span about 64% of the ocean’s surface—aims to introduce robust management frameworks. Following the inaugural symposium in Edinburgh, where over 500 participants from 50 countries highlighted the treaty's conservation goals, the Singapore event, co-organised by Mara, will engage global stakeholders in discussions about overcoming the ratification challenges. This symposium is pivotal as the treaty requires ratification by at least 60 countries by the 3rd UN Ocean Conference in June 2025 to become effective.
